Breast Cancer Types

Breast cancer society has now become most prevailing type of cancer among women, according to one of the surveys, every eighth women is suffering from breast cancer. Survival chances increase with the early detection of the cancer stage, although the treatment strategy varies from patient to patient. Cancer may affect the same organ differently, cancer in breast may be form inside the milk ducts, gland and may also affect the lobules. The nomenclatures of breast cancer are according to the part of the breast affected.

Breast Cancer Types

According the pathological division breast cancer may be invasive and noninvasive; these two types are further divided into other sub types according to the part affected by them. As the name indicates, invasive breast cancers have ability to affect the other body parts through the lymphatic system and the circulatory system whereas the noninvasive cancer has no effect on the nearby organs.

 

There are nine types of breast cancer that has been recognized by the pathologist. Lots of researches are conducting around the worlds, in order to find the best way to eliminate and treat breast cancer. The types are named according to the part affected by them and also their tendency of invasiveness.

Ductile carcinoma in-situ (DCIS)


DCIS is the cancer that is form inside the duct system of the breast and do not have the ability of invade. This type of tumor can be removed through surgery, in early stages it can also be eliminated through proper medication. It is the nonmalignant type of breast cancer that has the largest prevalence factor up till now.

Lobular carcinoma in-situ (LCIS)


It is another form of nonmalignant breast cancer that affects the lobules inside the breast. It also cannot affect the nearby organ due to its noninvasive nature. But, in case, if it starts growing and effect the whole lobular system then it became dangerous and surgery becomes the last option for patient.

Infiltrating ductal carcinoma (IDC)


It is the malignant or the invasive type of breast cancer. It is form in the milk duct and then invades to the nearby organ through the lymphatic system by affecting the lymph nodes. Most of the death occurred due to this type of cancer.

Medullary carcinoma


Medullary refers to the grey matter of the brain; in brain it forms the medullary rays. It is the most prevailing type of cancer and is malignant in nature. According to survey almost 15 % of the breast cancer deaths are due to this type of cancer. Age factor is the main reason for this breast cancer type. It is usually diagnosed in the women of age above forty and fifty. It is named so, because, the cancerous cells are just like the grey matter of the brain.

Infiltrating or invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC)


It is the second most prevailing breast cancer type after invasive ductal carcinoma. It affects the lobes and the lobules of the upper part of the breast. It has strong ability to invade throughout the whole body. Although it is the kind of cancer that is responsive to the hormone therapy, it is treated with the estrogen and the progesterone hormones during the hormone therapy.

Tubular carcinoma

During microscopic examination of this cancer, tubular structures appear. Therefore, it is named as tubular carcinoma. It is most common in the women, crossed the age of fifty.

Mucinous carcinoma (colloids)


It is the malignant type of breast cancer that affects the lymph nodes of the breast. As the name indicate, the cancerous cells when enter into the lymph nodes, they start producing the mucous, therefore, it forms the jelly like tumors. It effects the other body organs because of its malignancy.it is diagnose due to the jelly like tumors, as they appear differently from the other body cells, when viewed from microscope.

Paget’s disease

It is not a cancer, but, if not treated, it can leads to cancer. It is the dermotological changes of the breast. The skin of the breast becomes scaly and itchy. It also commonly diagnose in the women of age above fifty.

Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC)

It is the rarest but most dreadful type. It does not form tumors, but, grows in network and blocked the lymph nodes. Its external morphology shows the inflammation of skin.
